God is not a limited individual who sits alone up in the clouds on a golden throne. God is pure Consciousness that dwells within everything. Understanding this truth, learn to accept and love everyone equally.

[...] The Perfectly Enlightened guru makes you feel un-enlightened. The Perfectly Fit guru makes you feel like a fat slob. The Totally Rich guru makes you feel like a worthless loser. They have to - otherwise you wouldn’t buy their book. Which might be fine with the Fit guy or the Rich guy (as long as you have, at least to some extent, the wisdom to rise above the Ego and it’s desire for what it perceives you lack). Chances are they ARE super-fit or super-rich (doesn’t mean they aren’t jerks though). But the “Perfectly Enlightened” guy? That’s a whole ‘nother story. Ain’t no such thing, Dude. Ain’t no such thing. Further Reading: Zen is Boring You are already enlightened. [...]

Thanks all for the feedback. And for the additional comments. Although on the layers and the enlightened state being like a core in the middle somewhere - for me it's not so much a matter of stripping away layers of the personality but just accepting what is.

God knows that makes it easier to look back at my behaviour over the weekend - which is a nice segue into Steve's next post ;-)

"the feeling of being deeply connected to life", I like that. I once read that enlightment is not about adding anything new, but about chipping away at all of the unnecessary stuff we've added along the way. So this would go along with what you're saying: underneath all of the layers we've wrapped ourselves in, we're already enlightened.

Nicely put. Enlightenment is simply a switch in who you are, relative to your own perception. Its nothing to do with perfection. Indeed it can be quite sloppy. And take practice as you suggest.

As has been observed by several gurus, in the end our ideas about enlightenment can be the last barriers to being it.

Well said! And hey, the layout of your blog looks familiar. ;-)
Recently I read some books by <a href="http://www.hierennu.be/2008/02/05/gelezen-spirituele-verlichting-vergeet-het-maar/" rel="nofollow">Jed Mckenna</a> who writes nice myth-busting stuff about enlightenment.
