While I agree with the post and most of the comments, I actually believe the original dialog had a slightly different (perhaps broader) meaning, and bears a striking resemblance to an earlier quote attributed to Shunryu Suzuki:

Curly: Do you know what the secret of life is?

Curly: This. [Curly holds up one finger.]

Mitch: Your finger?

Curly: One thing. Just one thing. You stick to that and the rest don’t mean shit.

Mitch: But what is the “one thing?”

Curly: [smiles] That’s what you have to find out.

Shunryu Suzuki:

The most important thing it to find out what is the most important thing.”
