  • Is it revenge of the optimists or is it revenge of common sense? Could be both.

  • Yes probably, thank God. I don’t think anyone knows whether he’ll be able to make as big a difference as we need, but damn it’s just wonderful to have some optimism and hope back on our world political stage. As a Gen Xer I have to say it is the SINGLE only time I have ever felt anything other than cynicism and disparagement, apart maybe from the election of our current Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd with Midnight Oil’s Peter Garret as environmental minister (or whatever his portfolio is called) BUT they have disappointed us lefties over here in Oz so far with their flaccid compromising … maybe with some strong leadership coming out of Washington they’ll be less afraid to step up to the plate and do the right thing.

  • Why am I so excited about a politician I did not and could not vote for (I’m British). I hope he lives up to the expectation.

  • Well, we (the rest of the world) are excited because like it or not, the US is still the big cheese and their foreign policies, as Iraq showed yet again, can be devastating if directed by fucking dickhead, moron, evil bastards :-)

Unfortunately the smart people are business men and the things they want to get done are *nothing* to do with the wishes of the people. Being suckered in by the buzz word “change” is weak – change is inevitable and after Bush desirable, but has Zero substance or accountability.

I for one do not look to others to run my life, I run my life and the world would be a much finer place if we left everyone to do the same.

Stay at home politicians, no one will notice and the world will improve by itself.

  • Well, you’re of course entitled to your opinion.

As for me, while I usually would agree with you that politicians are a bloody useless lot, in this case I feel that Obama deserves a chance and that the optimism and leftist ideals that he represents are much needed and good things.

I prefer to extend the benefit of my doubt.
