In all seriousness, though, you’re right on point with this. One of the first things I tell people who ask me what they need to do to become more productive is “stop reading and thinking and start doing.”

And, of course, I spent a lot of time reading books, blogs, and How-tos before I realized I knew enough already. Now I only read books about things I don’t know or need to get better at (design, etc.) instead of productivity and personal development stuff.

Great job. Now I’ll have a hard time writing today’s post. ;p

Thanks for the comments guys. The truth is I was really playing Devil’s advocate with this post. There is plenty of grey area here and I am not unaware of the inherent irony of me bothering to maintain a blog if I think it is a complete waste of time! The thing is it makes a better headline than “sometimes it is a good idea to stop reading blogs and actually do some work”. Speaking of which…

I read and comment on blogs to make friends with other bloggers – so is part of what I’m aiming for.

Complete agreement from me on the ‘formula’ for success.

I have a motto: work smarter not harder. I guess the blogs and books are places where we might find ways of working smarter. This hasn’t happened often for me!

Thanks for this post. I like the monomaniacal obsession idea. I would add that a few of the rules on the 7-point list, especially “don’t hide under a bushel,” may be easier said than done and may still justify meditation and other approaches to get us more comfortable with ourselves (and showing who we are).
