The Tao of Enlightened Conversation
Steve and I have been trying to define what Rebel Zen is all about and one thing we want to convey is that it’s not just meant to be a mega-phone for what we have to say, but rather what we really want is to be part of the conversation.
Ok, that sounds like a bit of a Web 2.0 cliche I admit, but nevertheless it’s true.
Our reason for starting this website was to help others to see that there is so much information out there now that everybody who is seeking what we loosely call “Enlightenment” can truly ‘do it themselves’. Hence the DIY Enlightenment tag.
As for what enlightenment means, well that’s not something that we feel we have the right to define for you either. Defining what enlightenment is (and realising this enlightenment) is a totally personal and subjective thing. You might completely disagree with us, for example, by believing that your guru is the one and only path to true salvation. That’s okay as long as you’re prepared to enter into a discussion about that.
Are You A Rebel Zen Master?

By Seamus Anthony
Have you noticed a shift in the personal development world lately?
I have, and I know I’m not alone. I believe there’s a quiet movement on the rise that straddles both the worldly “success” field and the spiritual “enlightenment” field.
We’re a movement of connected individuals who DO want powerful tools for personal advancement in this life – but aren’t about to buy into the “bleached teeth and power suit” cliche of the “Wow! Transform Your Life and Get Rich Instantly!” variety.
We’re a movement of connected individuals who DO want to find lasting inner peace and happiness (which is – the way I see it anyway – all enlightenment really is) but who scoff at the idea of the “all-knowing” guru. And we’d rather give the “dolphins and rainbows” aesthetic a miss too, thanks very much.

Drugs Don’t Work? Try A Cosmic High…
By Séamus Anthony
You don’t need drugs to get high. Pure, substance-free bliss is waiting for you right now!
Sound like advertising copy?
Maybe, but it’s true.
The only thing is – it’s one of those you-had-to-be-there scenarios.
Language is powerful, but not enough to fully convey the fantastic life experience that is a “Cosmic High”.
There are descriptors: Nirvana, Bliss, Samadhi, universal consciousness, the mind of God, clarity, awareness, the Tao, perfection, oneness, no-mind, beginner’s mind – the list goes on but none of them suffice.
If you really want to know, you’ll have to go there yourself.
The good news? It’s not necessarily difficult … but it may take some patience.
Set Your Controls for the Heart of the Sun
The most tried and true method to make the connection is meditation. If you have never meditated, or you have and found it frustrating or un-enjoyable, take heart, this is normal. But if you want the reward you have to do the work!
The Slacker’s Secret to Happiness
By Seamus Anthony Ennis
If you have tried different methods to achieve happiness (meditation, reading self-help books, therapy, etc.) but have not succeeded then I’d like to share with you a very simple trick to being happy that has been blowing my mind lately…
In fact I actually believe it is the key to enlightenment and world peace.
Here it is …
Give up.
Or rather…
Let go.

Let go.
Let go of all that you are clinging to.
Let go of all the ideas in your mind.
All the should’s. All the want-to’s. All the trying-to’s. All the seeking-to’s. All the how-to’s. All the going-to’s.
Looking Through the Wrong End of the Telescope
By Seamus Anthony Ennis
It’s just my opinion, and I have no idea what I am talking about, but you – yes, you – have absolutely no clue what the hell is going on.
Yes, you heard me, and that goes for your guru, coach, expert or teacher also.
You see, sometimes when I am at barbecues, beer comfortably resting on my belly, paper plate piled high on my knee, the subject comes up that I write personal development articles and, for better or worse, I cringe. Why? Because the first thing that happens, at least in my mind, is that people look at me and think “Well, what the hell does he know that I don’t? He’s no guru; look at that blob of mayonnaise on his beard! And isn’t that the guy who drank a couple too many at Jo’s party last fortnight and made a fool of himself? Personal development writer indeed – hmmph!”
And the truth is they are right. I don’t know diddly. But neither do ‘they’ and neither, my friend, do you.

Rebel Zen and the Art of Imperfect Enlightenment
You Are Already Enlightened!
That’s right, and no – I’m not joking.
Zen Masters have publicly said that we are all enlightened, the trick is knowing it (or getting in touch with it). And if you haven’t any idea what it feels like to connect to this state of being then all I can say is it is very difficult for anybody to express in words. To briefly try (not the main point of this post) let me paraphrase Rachel Pollack’s words about the Hanged Man tarot card (from her book Seventy Eight Degrees of Wisdom): It’s feeling free to be who you are, even if everybody else thinks you have everything backwards; it’s the feeling of being deeply connected to life.
But here’s the rub: “perfect enlightenment” is probably a myth. A beat up. It’s a bit like saying ‘perfect musicianship’ or ‘perfect scientific methodology’.
These things most likely can’t exist and in fact, certainly in the case of artistic endeavour, absolute perfection ruins things. It stifles the life out of things and therefore makes them inherently imperfect again in some kind of weird feedback loop to nowhere.
