Personal Development for Musicians: Developing Plans for Success
As a musician, I often find that I’m struggling to remain a well-rounded person. I’m a classical pianist, and for the most part, that translates to a large number of hours spent in the practice room. While that’s great for my technique and musicianship, it’s not so wonderful when I start to think about other aspects of my life. Because I’ve focused so much on practice, it’s easy to feel that I’m underdeveloped in other areas – and that has led me to spend some time and energy on personal development. Although it got me far outside of my comfort zone, I identified several areas of my life that seemed lacking in attention and proficiency. It wasn’t easy to start developing these areas, but it’s been well worth the investment for me. Here are some of the areas of my life that I’ve been working on (besides being a musician, of course) – and I’ve found that development in these areas has helped me to feel well-rounded again.
Written Communication
Music Marketing (Guest Post)
Guest post by me over at Gen Y Rockstars, which is kind of ironic, seeing as I am about as Gen Y as Kurt Cobain ha ha. First of a series of 3 posts.
As a writer I am kind of happy with this series, nice combination of can’t-help-myself sales hype-type and genuine reflection.

An Interesting Life
The scene at the start on the train and all of the photos were taken, on a small, lo-fi digital camera in mid-2007 in France, mostly in Paris and on a visit to the Palace of Versailles. I got pretty bored of taking shots of monuments and crap like that so I started taking covert snaps of people minding their own business. Enjoy!
Blood and Glass and Leaves
A small collection of black songs about those moments in life where you look at yourself in a filthy, cracked, blood-flecked mirror and the first thought that springs to mind is “Yup – file this sucker under D for Damaged Goods”.
Transmuting Pain into Action
As you can see from this video, transmuting difficult or painful experiences into action is a logical process for artistes, but can you do the same if you are not an artist? And if so – how? Go for a jog? Launch a new product? Invade a small country?
By the way this tune is not about a girl – it’s about addiction – a reoccurring scenario in my life, if not always a problem (depends on which day you catch me).
